a place for all things Martial Arts

A Basic Guide

There are many different styles of martial arts: Karate, Judo, Kung Fu, Hapkido; the list goes on… A common question is: Which style is the best? Probably the best answer to this question is none/all. Each martial art has its benefits, but the common benefit of all of them is self improvement.

It’s very important to realize that two schools that teach the same style, are often drastically different. The name of the school tells you absolutely nothing about the quality of the school. Although many people simply choose a school by searching through the phone book, that is possibly the worst way to go about becoming a martial arts student.

A more successful approach is to first make a survey of the schools in your area. There may be more schools nearer you than you realize because many schools advertise very little, or not at all. Then, you should visit several of the schools, many times, before deciding where you want to train.

Choosing a school is critical to your success as a martial artist. It would be wise to spend the time and effort it takes to choose the right school for you. Even if it takes you 2 or 3 months of searching and visiting schools to decide, it will be well worth it to have found a school that suits your particular needs.
